<p>When Italian designer Italo Fontana discovered his grandfather’s old replica luxury watches designs in 2000, he probably thought he was a successful treasure hunter: in 1942, engineer Ilvo Fontana was commissioned to design and manufacture watches for Italian Navy and Air Force officers. Italo Fontana was born in Lucca in 1965 and the U-Boat company is still based in Lucca today. He has been passionate about design since he was a child, as his family worked in the textile industry. In addition, the Italian designer has always loved the sea, and he has faced the elemental power of the sea in his numerous water sports. U-Boat’s striking watch models seem to be the logical conclusion of Italo Fontana’s love of design and passion for the power of the natural elements.</p>

<p>What movements do U-Boat watches have?<br>
The first U-Boat watches were mainly powered by the Myota quartz movement, which impresses with its striking design. At the same time, U-Boat timepieces have also inspired true connoisseurs among watch lovers, because in the wave of success, Italo Fontana decided to improve his watches with luxurious interiors from now on. The mechanical movements of Swiss manufacturer ETA SA are now at the heart of many U-Boat watches, which are also supplied to well-known manufacturers such as Breitling, Omega or Tag Heuer. The Sommerso series is designed for professional divers. The design follows a clear technical line. The watch has a rotating bezel for optimal control of the elapsed dive time. Measuring 46mm, the Sommerso can also be optimally read and operated underwater.</p>
<p>With a simple dial, the designers clearly focused on the essentials, and nothing extra was installed other than a quickly adjustable date display. Luminous blue numerals, hour markers and hands are visually appealing. As with the models already shown, the crown is on the left side and is equipped with a screw-in protection mechanism.</p>
